2016 Coming to a Close…
It’s hard to believe this year is already almost over! 2016 was quite an eventful one, full of it’s ups and downs. For those of you who’ve followed my events and mixes over the past 12 months, you’ll know exactly what I mean.
Here in Playa del Carmen, I had the privilege of helping start a great series of roof-top events at the Be Playa hotel. Since our opening event with Cid Inc. in April we’ve hosted events with Darin Epsilon, Quivver and most recently Amber Long. We look to continue with more great progressive shows in 2017.
For me as a DJ, I had a fairly regular gig schedule that included more long solo sessions at Be Playa, the odd Sunday at Blue Parrot, and a few opening slots for night-time shows here. My biggest highlight of the year however has to be Burning Man – how could it not be? In the week we were there — and after breaking my collarbone in a biking accident the day before we were supposed to leave — I ended up playing three times, including ten hours at my own camp, a dark and hard set at the Octopus Garden stage, and the biggest highlight, getting to play for a couple of hours on the Afterburner rig that was set up for Carl Cox’s Playground stage. What an honor that was.
The early part of 2016 was a busy year production-wise, with a few notable remixes including a big on for the legendary John 00 Fleming, and one that turned a lot of heads for Gordey Tsukanov. As always with production, between running two companies, having lots of outdoor hobbies and making sure to spend quality time with my always supportive wife, getting into the studio and producing something worthwhile can be a challenge. I do however have a couple of new projects in the hopper that I look to finish in early 2017.
I’m really not sure what the new year will bring, but one of my main goals will definitely be to spend more time in the studio writing music. This year will also be the year that my 709Sessions radio show crosses the 10 year threshold, so of course that occasion will have to be celebrated!
All in all, right now playing the DJ “I’m hustling for a gig” game is getting a little tiresome as the years go by, and I find more and more I’m content with simply doing my own thing whether it’s writing music, putting on my own shows, or just playing those gigs for the people / venues that have always been super good to me – they do exist!
So always, thank you for the ongoing support of my music. It’s still amazing to get emails and messages from around the world, from people old and new who have discovered my work. You keep me going, always!
Thank you to all of you, have a wonderful and safe holiday season and all the best in 2017!
